Scary Weather Edition

Thanks you great guys at Surrey Downs Primary School for your "Bad Weather Stories". Some of the stories retold real events and some were invented by creative minds. It seems that cuddling up to Mum or Dad, or cuddly toys are great ways to cope with scary weather. Some stories are about overcoming fear by confronting it.

When I was scared by the Weather

by Jason Green

BOOM!
The TV was blearing we were watching a show on lighting. It was called 'THE WORLD AROUND US ' It was showing how destructive lighting could be. I clenched on to mum as tight as I could, eyes locked on the TV. Mum was gasping for air and trying to loosen my grip on her, "Jason let go of me. " "Sorry mum."

The show ended, it was 8:30, way past my bedtime. It was time to go to bed. I put my wheat bag in the microwave to warm it up and walked into the bathroom and started to clean my teeth.

Pitter-patter, pitter-patter - all of a sudden a rush of fear ran through my body. It was raining. I ran down the hall only to hear Dad saying to Mum "The weather man says we are going to have a THUNDERSTORM! " I ran into the lounge screaming with fear. Mum said
"What's wrong Jason"
"We are going to have a thunderstorm, and I am scared of them"
"Oh it will be ok, just go to bed and it will all pass over"

Beep, Beep, Beep. I jumped up in fear only to realise that it was only the microwave going off to say my wheat bag was ready. I went and got my wheat bag out of the microwave and went to bed and started to drift off.

ZAP! BANG! CRASH! BOOM!
I woke to the sound of a thunderstorm I started to shiver in fear because I knew what a storm could do to your property and I thought I was in danger. I grabbed my favourite teddy bear and ran down to Mum and Dad's room. I woke them up and they said to me half asleep
"Jason what are you doing?"
"I am scared of the thunder and lightning"
"See I told you we should not have let him watch that show" groaned Mum.
"Ok Jason you can sleep with us tonight"
"Thank you Dad"

I jumped in bed and slowly drifted off, with the comfort of Mum and Dad by my side.

The Big Storm

by Daniel Bassham

On one sunny day on a Tuesday I got out of bed. I had a shower, brushed my teeth, got dressed and then ate my breakfast. It was a big day for me because I was going for a ride on my bike with my cousin Kade to the Tea Tree Gully bike track. We were going to ride our bikes to the track there from my house at Surrey Downs to the bike track near the Tea Tree Gully Library.

It was ten o'clock in the morning when Kade came over to my house. We left for our big ride. We were almost there, when it started to rain. It got heavier and heavier. Then it started to hail. We thought we would go and look for some shelter. We got to the track, but there were no sign of shelter. Kade and I started to worry. As the rain got heavier Kade and I started to get scared.

We saw a pay phone down the road near the old dump just below the deli where my Mum used to work. I knew a phone number you could use to get a free phone call. My cousin Kade rang the number and then got his free call. He dialled his number because my uncle Neil had a work van to take us and our bikes home to Kades house.

Ten minutes later he came to pick us up. We were no longer scared. "Thank you Uncle Neil", I cried.
"No problems," said my Uncle Neil. Then we got to Kades house. We sat by the heater and ate some toast.

When I Was Scared By Weather

by Aidan Cousins

BOOM!
"Ah! Mum is this going to last much longer?" I asked.
"No, it should soon pass over. Don't get so scared, it's just a lightning storm-and I don't think it will come very close to the car." Ah good ol' Mum she can make the scariest things go away.

Hi, my name is Aidan and I am re-telling the story of when I was about 5- or 6- years old. At the moment I am in our old car and we, I mean my family and myself, are stuck. Stuck in the 'middle' of a lightning storm.
"Yeah, there's nothing to worry about," my dad said "Just count 3 loud bangs and then they should eventually dim down."

"But it's scary. What if some lightning comes right down on us and we get electrocuted and we all die, or if the lightning only gets half of the car and you and Mum die, or if it hits the back and Luke, Emily and I die?" At this point I was extremely worried because I'd counted 3 lightning strikes and already they weren't getting softer - or louder.

CRACK!
"Wahh!" my little 3-year-old sister Emily started to cry and it was making me cry too. Pit, Pit, Pit, pit, pit. Pit. The rain was clearing, and the thunder was too. Hallelujah! It's stopped! From then on I always calmed down when thunder and just counted 3 lightning strikes - and was patient.

Those Evil Clouds Are Very Scary

by Nic

"Clouds, those evil scary clouds." I say this every time I go outside. Most people like the clouds because they are fluffy, white and big, but they terrify me. It looks like they will fall down and squash me and they always look like horrible things. Others say they look like people, animals and other nice things, but all I see is monsters, dragons, other clouds and much more. They especially frighten me when they turn black and dark. To me they resemble terror and giants... demons even.

When it turns night I am safe. Other people are terrified by the black, dark gloomy atmosphere, but I like it because there are no clouds. Something I hate just as much is going to bed. If I sleep, then the daytime comes quicker and I can see the clouds.

DiNg! dInG! My alarm sounds and another day with clouds. I open my window and I see no clouds. " YeAh!" I shout, and I think to myself "I guess someone must have like blown them up because they hate clouds too." Then I quickly get dressed and run outside to play with my friends. They all say "There are no clouds, it's like night in the day." So I slowly walk home and just go back to bed since there is nothing else to do.

DiNg! dInG! DinG! My alarm sounds, I open my window and I see my friends my friends and I yell out "Hey you g..." As I was talking , I was interrupted and someone said,
"You hate clouds so go away." That really annoyed me. Then someone said "Prove you like clouds and you can join us on the hunt." I thought about it and said
"Nah." Then someone yelled out "ChIcKeN!!!" Then I yelled out
"OK have it your way!" So I marched outside and sat down looking at the scary clouds. 2 hours later I said "This...is...so...boring! Soon after a while the clouds got darker and darker and I was getting scared, but I stayed, being brave. Suddenly my nightmare came true . "Noooooo!" I screamed.

***1 month later***

I'm not scared of clouds any more, I think they are cool and now I can play with my friends. If I meet people who are scared of clouds I tell them to do what I did, but I also warn them... clouds do fall down as a little thing people call... fog.

The Remembered Holiday to PORT ELLIOT!!!!

by Stacey Golding

About three years ago, our family went on a trip to Port Elliott on the Easter long weekend. Mum and Dad thought the place would be great to have a holiday in because of it being near a beach and it being a small country town. The first two days were great, we had the best time swimming, riding our bikes, walking on the beach and going on the occasional walk into the town, until the disaster on Easter Sunday.

Easter morning we all woke up and went looking for Easter eggs. We had a feast of chocolate for breakfast, then packed up and went for a trip down to Victor Harbour for the day to see our friends in the Victor Harbour caravan-park. We stayed with our friends for the afternoon and had some pizza for lunch. Later in the afternoon we headed back to the caravan-park we were staying in. Dad and Luke went off to play some soccer on the oval and Mum and I cleaned up the tent. Later that night it started to get windy and rainy. We thought it was just a small storm that would blow over, so we just continued playing a board game. After a little while it got worse and started to hail, so Dad put up some more tarpaulins and tightened all the tent guide ropes to make sure they wouldn't come undone. Once every thing was secure Dad put my little brother to bed and sat down again.

There was a huge "BANG", it was lightning, "Ah!" I shouted as another bolt crashed down. All of a sudden it went quiet, then after a few seconds it started to hail and rain really hard and it started to thunder. I started to get really scared and went and sat over next to Mum. She went and helped Dad to keep the tent pegged down into the ground. Other tents in the park were stuck in trees. Some people left and went home..

It was a disastrous night and I ended up sleeping in Mum and Dad's tent with Mum and my little brother. Dad went and slept in my tent with my big brother. All through the night Mum and Dad kept checking the tents and things to make sure they were all pegged down.

In the morning we packed up and left because we were supposed to be leaving that day. This trip was the scariest trip I had ever been on.

When I Was Afraid Of The Weather

by Nicole

I'll tell you a little story about when I was afraid of the weather. It was when I was a little girl; I was about four years old. I was at my kindergarten and our teacher was reading us a really scary story (well I thought it was at that age). Anyway, the story was about these two young schoolgirls that were at school and it was a really stormy day and they were really scared because they had heard this rumour about this person that goes around hurting animals and young children ONLY when there's a big storm. As it was still really stormy and they had to walk home. When they were walking home they saw a man that fitted the description of the guy in the rumour; he was dressed in black and had some kind of stick in his hand. They kept on seeing him and he seamed to be following them. Ring, Ring, Ring. The bell rang which meant we had to pack up. The bell scared me half to death because I was so wrapped up in the story. My best friend and I were wondering what would happen to the girls if the man who hurts kids is the guy that they keep on seeing.

My dad was supposed to be picking us up from kindy after work. "He's late. He's late." I kept on saying to my friend. I said I'm going to start walking home if he doesn't get here soon.
Ten minutes passed...
Fifteen minutes passed...
I'm going to start walking home.
"See ya later alligators" I shouted to my friends as I started going. Just as I started walking out the gate it started to poor down with hail. I ran back inside as any sane person would. I was already soaked and I was scared half to death because it just suddenly started to hail.
"I absolutely hate storms." I shouted.
Ten more minutes passed.
AAGGHH what happen to the lights? They've gone off. BANG! The door suddenly slammed shut and that also scared me. "It must have been the wind" my friend said in a very hesitant voice. If she was thinking what I was thinking I know why. I was thinking what if that was the wind monster or the evil hail queen. My Imagination was running as wild as a cheetah chasing its prey.
SMASH.
"What was that." It was the vase that was on the stall near the door. I could see a funny shaped figure but I blinked and it had gone. It looked like a person but a big blob. At that stage I definitely thought it was the evil hail queen. My heart was pumping like a mad gorilla thumping its chest. It was heading towards me. I couldn't move at all. I felt like I was going to faint but I couldn't do that either. I was afraid that it was the hail queen and she was going to freeze me to death.
"ANDREW! What are you doing here? Did you knock the vase over near the door?"
"Yeah, sorry about that but I don't think it broke."
"Why are you so late?"
"I got out late at school. Is Meghan coming over tonight?"
"Yeah. Can we go now I hate being in a place with no lights and a storm going on outside." We went home and we had all these yummy lollies and junk food.

Why Is The Weather Like This!

by Samantha

It has been raining for the last three days and yesterday it was the WORST! I was sitting in my bedroom and I was about 10 years old and it was thundering and hailing so much and I was too scared to go down the hallway to my mum. My dad and my brother were at Coles doing the food shopping and mum and I were at home. So I just stayed in my bedroom. An hour had passed and the weather had gotten worse I was even more scared than I was before. I screamed once and mum came running to me and said,
"What's wrong?"
The weather and thunder! And I am scared of it!"
"Oh don't be so silly it's just a loud noise that is bothering you and it won't last that long! I promise."

Then when mum walked out of my room I thought to myself, "How could she promise that the thunder will stop soon? She doesn't control the weather." Well anyway I started to look through my drawers to see if I could find anything to do, I found a picture of a horse that I drew when I was about 7 years old. It looked really neat, even if I tried to draw that picture of the horse again it wouldn't turn out as good.
I thought I might have drawn a few more excellent pictures when I was little but I couldn't seem to find anymore. So I then had nothing to do, so I took out all of the magazines that I had and started to read them. Within two minutes the power went out and then it went dark and that made me scream a lot!!! "Mmmmuuuummmmmmm" shouted, "come here! Come here."

Mum came running into my bedroom and said, "It's ok we've only had a blackout and you are thinking someone is coming to get you! But they're not..."
Mum took me out into the kitchen to light some candles. She went out and got our lantern (that has been in the shed for ages). I wouldn't let her leave me so I ran out after her. She said to me,
"What? You're still scared to be in the house on your own and you know that no one is in the house!"
"Yes Mum that is correct, I want to come out in the shed with you because it's too scary to stay in the house."
"Not even for about two minutes, if that."
"Yes Mum that's right!"

Anyway Mum went out in the shed and got the torch and we both came inside. I lit the candles and Mum got out the lantern from under the bar and put that in the lounge. Within ten minutes my Dad and Brayden came home and told us that the storm was so bad that they had to go a different way home as nearly all of the roads in our area were blocked off. The traffic lights were out of power due to the blackout. We couldn't do anything apart from play board games, so Brayden and I played Monopoly. It wasn't that much fun but I guess it was better that nothing. About an hour later the power came on, the storm had stopped and the sunshine came out. There was even a rainbow in the sky. I went back into my room and started to clean up the mess I had made with my magazines.

When I Was Scared By The Weather

by Caroline Cameron

"But, Mum," I whined, "It's only 11 o'clock."

"No buts about it!" Mum shouted. I stomped up the stairs to my bedroom and slammed the door. I angrily put my red polka dotted pyjamas on, sleeve by sleeve, and, in the process, I tripped over my skateboard. I fell on my backside and, man, it really HURT!

I was so angry I didn't care. I got into bed and turned on to my side and looked out the window. I saw the rain falling heavily and little droplets specking on my window. The tall dark gum trees swayed from side to side. In moments, they made a reflection on our shed with the streetlight on the street behind. The rain and wind started to get heavier and heavier. The wind started to whistle and branches to scratch against my window.

I turned over and pulled my covers over my head and hoped that it would stop soon. But if anything, the wind got stronger. My new strategy was to put my fingers in my ears but it didn't make any difference. I couldn't stand it anymore.

I ran down the hallway and opened my parents' door. My Mum and Dad were asleep, facing away from each other. I ran up and jumped into my parents' bed, pulled up the covers, closed my eyes and finally got some shuteye.

But when I woke up, I found myself in my bed. When I asked my parents, they said they moved because my arms and legs kept whacking them.

Are There Giants On The Roof?

by Nikita

When I was small, I thought that I could be anyone, go anywhere, but there was one thing holding me back... I was scared of thunder. The thought of me being trampled to death by some unknown sound or heavy boulder thingy every time I stepped out into a stormy day frightened me more than you could ever believe. Every time there was a storm, I would duck for cover under my mother's bed, whimpering like a child (well dah.) The roof would shake, and to make things worse, my house has a tin roof.

All my troubles seemed far away in the future, when I was to be a teenager, but I found as I got older, I got more and more frightened and obsessed with the thought that giants were scampering over the ceiling, trying to enter my home and devour me. Sounds weird, but I found that it is a lot more common than you think. One night, there was a big storm, and I was shivering and running around in the hallway like a headless chicken, screaming in pure, undeniable fear. My Mum would tell me to settle down, but I couldn't, and would break out in shock or a coughing fit (which may had been the beginning of my first asthma attack , which I was diagnosed with the following winter).

My Dad was usually working, so didn't really know how I was reacting till a terrible night when he was home... I was in the loungeroom, eating my dinner, and Dad came home. "Close all the windows," Dad would say, "there's a storm coming." He was right, and oh what a storm there was! It was a "thunder/dust storm," where a lot of thunder was booming, and dust was blowing a gale outside of my window. But I actually stopped panting for a minute and actually thought for a moment, are there such things as giants? Mum said it was all bull****, and now I could see what she meant. There weren't any giants on my roof, running amuck like idiots. It had all been my imagination. That was the night I got over my fear, by simply using my commonsense. I am now not afraid of thunder, but before then I really was.

When I Was Scared Of The Weather

by Leah Willams

When I was younger, I used to get scared of the weather. When the lightning whooshed across the sky I ran behind my Mum about as fast as it did.

One day I was staying at a farmhouse when a storm rolled in. The rain tapped hard on the tin roof and the lightning lit up the sky. It was very cold that rainy night. It was late afternoon and I was getting ready for a sleep before dinner but I was too scared. I lay there wide awake. Then I heard creaking noises coming from the hall. I said to myself that it was just someone walking. I got out of bed and as I was opening the bedroom door a loud roar of thunder scared me and I ran as fast as I could down to the kitchen. Soon it was time for bed but I couldn't sleep. I sat in bed with the night lamp on low. I kept my soft toy near me and my bed cover, covering half of my face. I finally went to sleep. By the morning it was starting to fine up. The thunder and lightning had stopped but it was still raining. It was only light though. I wasn't scared anymore but I was very tired because I stayed up half of the night. By late morning the sun was shining and I was out in the farmyard. I hadn't seen a storm like that for 3 years and that one wasn't as bad. But I was older then so I wasn't scared.

A Very Noisy Wedding

by Dean Coats

It was a terrible way to start the day. A storm with lots of rain and dark clouds. I was starting to get ready for my Aunty's wedding. I got dressed and waited for the rest of my family. After I had a few games on the Nintendo, I was told to go and wait in the car. I put the radio on and listened to the news. They said the weather was going to clear up in the afternoon, so we probably would not get wet.

My Dad drove until we got to the zoo. He didn't know we had to get to the back car park but we still got there with plenty of time. The wedding was going to be held in one of the gardens at the zoo. We had a bit of time before it started so we had a look around. My Mum stayed under the umbrella because it was starting to rain.

About 15 minutes later, the ceremony began. Most people were under the big umbrellas, but there were a few on the paths. Through the ceremony you could hear the cars at the Adelaide 500. There were also little bits of lightning and thunder.

Half way through the ceremony, there was a gigantic sound. No one knew what it was. Most people thought it was one of the tree branches falling. It was only a loud clash of thunder. The birds flew away and the birds in the cages all started making noises. Then all the animals from the zoo started making noises. I think everyone was scared including the animals.

The ceremony finished and then started to rain. There was no more thunder after that but a lot of eating and drinking.

Getting Wet On Holidays

by Ashleigh Hobbs

One night in Victor Harbour there was a thunderstorm. I was in my caravan and the pop top was up. The wind was washing through the vents. I was scared because I thought the caravan was going to tip over. There was a leak in the roof and I was getting wet. Mum put a bucket under the leak. I put my head under the blanket and I fell asleep. The next morning I woke up and I looked outside. It was still a miserable day. I needed to go to the toilet so I put my slippers on and ran over to the toilet. When I came out it was still raining so I waited until the rain stopped, then walked back to the caravan. That day was cold and windy and I stayed in the caravan. The whole time we where there it was cold and the day we left the sun was breaking through.

Things That Go Crash In The Night

by Courtney Bartley

The first time I was ever really scared of the weather was when I was about 10 and still living in my old house. It had rained all day at school and my brother had to walk home in wet clothes. My Dad came home after work telling us how bad his day had gone. That night while we were having tea, the lights started to flicker and then they turned off. We had to eat the rest of our tea by candle light. It was very quiet because the television had no power and all we could hear was the sound of the wind and the rain out side. It started to get really dark and the power hadn't come on. All I could do was to look out the window at the storm.

I was all fine with everything until I heard a big crack outside. My Dad went to check it out. I started to panic, the wind started to get really strong. My Dad came rushing in telling us how one of our gum-tree branches had broken off. He wanted us to come and have a look, so we all went out. When I went outside, our front yard had a humungous branch sitting in the middle of our lawn. After that we went out the back, just to see what it looked like. Mum was devastated, her plants had fallen down and on top of our tool shed was a big tree from the neighbour's yard. Then it started to rain hard and we had to run inside. We got inside. According to Mum's watch it was time for bed (because of no power). I couldn't go to sleep because it started to hail and I was seeing things. But after a while the storm calmed down and I went to sleep . The next morning I asked my parents what time the power came back on. They said around 12 o'clock. I thought to myself if I didn't go to bed until 12.00 I would have gone crazy.
