Red Legged Earthmites Activity

Billie listens to earth mites runningThe sound of red-legged earthmites running across the soil was a fearful sound for both Chelsea Chickpea and Billie Bean.

What are red-legged earthmites and what threat do they pose for crops and pastures?

  • Check out the internet for information on these little creatures. (Hint: start with the Agriculture W.A. Entomology website.
  • Download the picture we have provided. Use your coloured pencils, textas or paints to make your picture the same colours as a real red-legged earthmite (there is at least one coloured picture of a red-legged earthmite on the internet)

Quiz Question

Look at the number of body parts and number of legs on the red-legged earthmite.
It's definitely a little bug but is it an insect? Why or why not?
