Mediterranean Tour Activity

Freddy Faba and Chelsea Chickpea are members of the Legume plant family. They just returned home to Downsanup Downs. They went on a fantastic round-the-world trip, visiting cousins like the Lentil Twins in countries around the world. They went to countries which have a Mediterranean climate, like we do here in Perth.

Activity

1. Use an atlas to find out where the Mediterranean Sea is. The area around it is called the Mediterranean region. Colour in the Mediterranean Sea and label the surrounding countries on the map below.

2. What is it about the climate in much of southern Australia that makes it similar to that in the Mediterranean region? When does most of the rain fall in places with a Mediterranean climate?
This picture of Freddy and Chelsea contains a bit of a hint!

3. How many countries can you name that have a Mediterranean climate somewhere in the country? Colour these countries in on the map of the world above, using a different colour from the Mediterranean Sea and list them here.

4. The agriculture of the first Australians from Europe was based on agriculture in Britain. Think about the differences between the British climate and ours and list as many as you can.

  • Do you think these differences might affect how agriculture is practised?
  • What problems do you think these differences might have caused these early Australian farmers?
