Teacher Information

Have your students take the technology challenge of turning raw materials into something delicious and nutritious.

The Great Grains Cook-Off was run as a National Science Wekk activity in 2001 and makes a great classroom activity at any time.

Students are required to:

  • Select from a given list of materials
  • Design a method for using those materials to produce a delicious outcome
  • Prepare a design brief for producing that outcome

In 2001, more than 30 students from Tasmania and Western Australia took the technology challenge of turning raw materials into something delicious and nutritious. The six best design briefs were cooked and taste tested by an 'expert panel' of students from Jolimont Primary School in Western Australia.

The activity sheet is provided here.

This activity is relevant to these learning areas:

Science

Natural and Processed Materials
Students will understand that processing of raw materials results in new materials with different properties and uses.

Technology and Enterprise

Technology Process
Students generate ideas and prepare design and production proposals in response to the specification developed from the design challenge.

Materials
Students use appropriate technology skills when selecting and using materials which are appropriate to achieving intended solutions to meet a technology need.

Information
Students use appropriate technology skills when designing, adapting, using and presenting information to meet a technology need.
